National voter registration day
Tuesday, September 24, 2019 was National Voter Registration Day (NVRD). Members of the LWVCCA Voter Service Committee set up a voter registration and voter information table at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis from 2 to 6 p.m.
Since Automatic Voter Registration is now the law in Massachusetts, most of the passers-by were already registered but they thanked us for our service or gave us thumbs up for our work.
Among those we did register were two new citizens, one from the Dominican Republic and the other from Macedonia.
Our table was also chock full of information on Ranked Choice Voting and Election Day Registration. We even celebrated the upcoming anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment by wearing Suffragist white.
Special thanks to Judy Thomas, Mati Ligon and Carolyn Richardson for helping Anita Rogers and Rosemary Shields at this voter service event.
Automatic Voter Registration
In 2016 a coalition of organizations across the state, including the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts, joined to advocate for stronger civic education in Massachusetts schools. In 2018, after considerable input from the community, the Massachusetts Board of Education approved, and then the Massachusetts Legislature enacted, Bill S.2631, An Act to Promote and Enhance Civic Engagement, and on November 8, Governor Charlie Baker signed it into law.
